The eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed the abscence of the "Damn Yankees" logo from our season, the sparrow-eyed should have at least noticed the large black question mark. We have had to cancel our scheduled production of "Damn Yankees". And here's where your jolly old editor will be skating on thinnish ice. Because I asked the members of Music on Stage's board if we should tell the reason why we cancelled "Damn Yankees". It's my opinion that we should explain why we cancelled it. People, (you guys and gals reading this, for example), our season ticket holders and other people in and out of community theatre in general are interested in knowing why a show is cancelled. Like I said, I asked the members of the board and got 3 specific answers back. One agreed with me and thought we should say why we cancelled "Damn Yankees". Another said that no one is interested and if they are they can ask us. And the third thought we could use "Due to circumstances beyond our control...", which is fair enough, the reason we cancelled was beyond our control.
As one of the producers of "Damn Yankees" I know exactly why we cancelled the show. Very simply, we held 2 nights of auditions and 1 night of call backs and did not have nearly enough people audition to cast the show. "Damn Yankees" is a baseball-themed show and requires a certain number of young to early middle-aged men to be the members of the baseball team. We had 2 men that fit that description. The "certain number" I alluded to in the previous sentence was not 2, it was considerably larger. In the past if we were short 1 or 2 or 3 or even 4 people we'd move forward and start making phone calls, contacting past performers, etc. We were short 2 leads plus 4 or 5 others and we'd already made calls to past performers and not enough of them were available. So we made the difficult decision to cancel the show. After all, we can't force people to be in our shows and wouldn't want to if we could. The low audition turnout was beyond our control. As one of the producers I'd love to know why the turnout was so low. If anyone knows, please contact me via our website's questions page.
That said - we WILL be replacing "Damn Yankees" with another production that will run June 2 thru June 17 instead of the April timeslot that "Damn Yankees" was to run in. We pushed the show dates further into the year in order to have more time to acquire the rights and get a production team in place. We have selected the show and are currently awaiting word on the availability of the rights. As soon as we know, we'll post it on our website. All of the presold tickets for "Damn Yankees" will be honored with the June production.
If you don't hear from me again...then most likely the Wrath of the Board has come down on me and I'll have been well and truly muzzled.
